With one of Public Relation's work programs by holding a seminar on global warming, EFEC succeeded in providing knowledge on how to end global warming step by step which now is increasing.
The speakers is EDFAN DARLIS, SE., M.Si., Ak, who is a Lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Riau University. The event took place on Saturday, September 30, 2023, in Riau University Hospital Hall, 3rd floor.
The theme of our seminar is "Global Warming is a Global Warning: Youth Action to Reduce Global Warming!" We chose this theme to invite young people to participate in reducing the impact of global warming.
There are two important messages conveyed in this theme.
1. Global warming is a serious threat to the survival of humans and other living creatures on Earth.
2. Young people play an important role in reducing the impact of global warming through concrete actions, such as reducing the use of private vehicles, using renewable energy, and minimizing the use of disposable plastics.
During the seminar, our speaker mentioned the factors that cause global warming. There are four main factors, which are:
1. Greenhouse effect: Increased production of greenhouse gases leads to greater concentrations of ozone, which then reacts with greenhouse gases. The result is a reduction in O3 concentration in the stratosphere. The presence of O3 holes can lead to a greater intensity of ultraviolet radiation from the sun entering the Earth. This, in turn, causes an increase in the Earth's temperature.
2. Use of fossil fuels: The burning of fossil fuels in motor vehicles and industry produces carbon dioxide gas, which contributes to global warming.
3. Deforestation: Illegal logging causes a decrease in forested areas and reduces the forest's capacity to absorb carbon dioxide.
4. Air pollution: Industrial factories and motorized vehicles contribute to air pollution, which is also a cause of global warming.
5. Methane gas: Livestock and organic waste produce methane gas, which is also a major contributor to climate change.
The speaker also mentioned the effects of global warming, which include:
1. Rising sea levels: Indonesia is experiencing a rise in sea levels, which has resulted in flooding and erosion of coastal areas.
2. Increased frequency and intensity of floods and landslides: The melting of glaciers in the Himalayas has led to an increase in the frequency and intensity of floods and landslides in Indonesia.
3. Changes in rainfall patterns: Climate change has brought about alterations in rainfall patterns, leading to droughts and water scarcity in certain regions of the country.
4. Agricultural sector affected: The agricultural sector is also impacted by climate change, as rising temperatures and changes in rainfall patterns result in crop failures and reduced yields.
5. Increase in frequency and intensity of extreme weather events: Climate change has also resulted in an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, such as storms, which have caused significant damage to infrastructure and property.
During his session as a speaker in our seminar, he mentioned that the "Movement to Anticipate Global Warming" is currently taking place both internationally and domestically.:
1. Internationally
- Kyoto Protocol
Came into force on 16 February 2005, it regulates regulations for advanced industries to reduce emissions by 5.2%.
- Vienna Convention for the Protection of The Ozone Layer 1985 agreement.
- Montreal Protocol (2016)
Producing high-tech goods that are environmentally friendly, such as hybrid cars that are fuel-efficient, resulting in lower emissions.
- 2015 Paris Agreement
Member countries are expected to submit their nationally determined contributions (NDC).
- COP (Conference of the Parties)
The Conference of the Parties is the highest decision-making conference of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The COP was signed in 1992 during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro and came into force in 1994.
2. Domestically (in Indonesia)

- Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) document. Implementation of the 2015 Paris Agreement
Individual countries' efforts to reduce emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change are essential. Indonesia is committed to reducing its unconditional greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions target to 29% and conditionally, with international support, to 41%.
- FoLU NET SINC 2030;
It is a condition where the level of carbon absorption in the forestry sector and other land uses is balanced or even higher than the level of emissions produced by that sector in 2030.
He also encouraged us, the youth, to participate in the "Movement to Anticipate Global Warming":
1. Reducing the Use of Motor Vehicles
2. Maintaining Nature Conservation
The excessive exploitation of natural products, such as logging and burning of forests to clear land, must be controlled or stopped.
3. Controlling Electricity Usage
4. Controlling waste
With this seminar, we hope that everyone will become aware of the dangers of global warming and start taking action to reduce it.
